Online Workshops for Sign Language Interpreters

Sign Language Interpreters need to earn CEUs (continuing education units) to maintain their certification. The intent of CEUs is directly in the name: continuing our education. By continuing to learn, we continue to grow. While there are life circumstances that may cause an interpreter to not be able to complete their CEUs on a regular basis, earning all of your CEUs right before the end of your CEU cycle is counterintuitive to the intent of the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP).

According to RID's website (www.rid.org) here are a variety of ways sign language interpreters can earn RID approved CEUs online, including:

1. Sponsor Initiated Activities

Definition: Pre-approved RID Sponsored Activities (Advertising shows the RID CMP logo). Attendees must sign the Activity Report Form with name and RID member number or submit a CEU tracking sheet to get CEU credit.

These Include:

Live Virtual Trainings:

There are sign language interpreter workshops available in real-time online. These are pre-scheduled and require you to register ahead of time.

Pre-recorded Trainings:

There are sign language interpreter workshops that are available to you on your own schedule. You can pay for these on an individual workshop basis or in bundles. Each organization varies.

Subscription Services:

There are even sign language interpreter workshops available via subscription. For example, CEUflix offers CEU approved workshops online with a variety of topics.

2. Independent Studies:

Self-designed projects to develop skills or knowledge in a specific area (e.g., class or workshop development and presentation, mentor/mentee work, self-study class, literature review, etc.) The activity MUST be pre-approved by an RID Approved Sponsor. The sponsor will provide and assist you with completing the Independent Study forms. All requested paperwork must be submitted to the Sponsor so it can be processed and submitted to RID within 45 days after the end of the Independent Study. Earn up to 2.0 CEUs per Independent Study. Each Independent Study must be completed within 12 months.

This Includes:

Mentoring Services:

You are able to earn sign language interpreter CEUs through approved mentoring. You need to make sure the CEUs are approved before you start mentoring. Some companies have taken the initiative to have the paperwork pre-approved to make the process easier for you.

3. PINRA:

Participant Initiated Non-RID Activity: The activity MUST be pre-approved by an RID-Approved Sponsor. The sponsor will provide and assist you with completing the PINRA form.

4. Academic Coursework:

Degree-earning courses at an accredited college (listed on the Council for Higher Education Accreditation’s Web sitewww.chea.org/search). CEUs are processed within the same CMP cycle in which the class was taken and completed. The sponsor will provide and assist you with completing the Academic Coursework form.
